The Winnebago Indians first lived in the Green Lake area in the 1600s. The first area settler is said to be James Powell, who came here in 1835. In 1862, the village of Dartford became the county seat.

Trains first came to the area in 1871, bringing with them many visitors and settlers who became enchanted with the beauty of Green Lake. To end confusion with the rail station called Green Lake; Dartford officially changed its name to Green
Lake in 1907.
